ABSTRACT
In the early 18th century, the westernization movements initiated in the Ottoman Empire significantly influenced the society through the changes they brought about in a wide array of domains, including military, bureaucracy, education, and architecture. Over time, Western concepts and values contributed to the Ottomans developing their distinctive forms of expression. The western influences observed in the field of art emerged as a reflection of this understanding. The typology of Ottoman gravestones, a vital component of Ottoman culture, aligns closely with the architectural styles of the periods in which they were produced. The stylistic transformations in Ottoman architecture
influenced by western elements are also distinctly observable in gravestones. The data presented in this study is derived from the examination of more than 5000 gravestones, the majority of which are in Istanbul’s graveyards. Based on this analysis, the general typology of Ottoman gravestones can be explained, they can be classified as open, with capstone, and sarcophagus-style grave types, and the structural features of headstones and footstones can be traced. Furthermore, the evolving decorative approach and symbols of the westernization period, as well as the language, ornamentation preferences, calligraphic characteristics, literary artistry, types of die and other cultural elements of the era, can be identified and analyzed.
